Er wurde in Oldham, Lancashire, als Sohn von William und Pamela Biggins geboren. Aufgewachsen ist er in Salisbury, Wiltshire, wo er die St. Probus Schule besuchte, Sprechunterricht nahm und in lokalen Theatergruppen mitwirkte. Seine erste Hauptrolle auf der Bühne spielte er mit 17 Jahren in einer Produktion von Molières „Der widerspenstige Arzt“ im Rahmen des Stage '65 Festivals, was ihm Engagements bei einem lokalen Repertoiretheater einbrachte.
